The One You Can Touch
Tap to hear the story
This is the youngest cabin in the park, built in 1890. By then Parker County had a courthouse, a railroad, and a college. Log construction was no longer necessity. It was choice.
It is also the only cabin here where you are supposed to put your hands on things. This is the education cabin.
Work the spinning wheel. Grind the corn. Try the weaving. Every one of these was a chore somebody did before breakfast, and every one is harder than it looks.
Fourth and seventh graders come through here by the busload, because Texas history is on the test in both of those years. What they remember afterward is almost never a date. It is how heavy the work was.
Take your time in this one. It was built to be used.
